A novice bowler took the spoils after having taken up the sport only seven weeks ago in the Gerald Gliddon Charity Cup.

Martin Stevens took the prize at the West-End Bowling Club’s competition which was open to non-members and members on Sunday, July 22. The day also included a BBQ and raffle to help raise funds for Diabetes UK.

Sonia Moore from the club said: “Some of our members already have it, (Diabetes) and some of us may get it, so it was a nice cause to get behind.

“I thought it was a wonderful afternoon; everyone looked as though they enjoyed it. We must have had up to 50 members and non-members playing together.

“It’s been another hot afternoon down here at Westexe Rec, and it was especially hot in the kitchen cooking the onions, and the guys on the BBQ have done well too.”

On winning the trophy, Mr Stevens said: “I’m overcome with emotion to have won this; it’s my first bit of silverware. I’m going to have a drink and savour the moment.”

Mr Stevens took up bowls as his wife thought it would be an excellent way to improve their social life: “I haven’t played in any competitive fixtures yet, so winning this will help boost my confidence and hopefully there will be more success to come.

“I would encourage everyone to come down and give bowling a go. It’s a great way of getting out in the sunshine, meet new people and have some fun.”

Of the club members, Martin Stevens came first, with Gill Callaghan second. Mike Slade finished last and collected a toy gun which fired ping pong balls. Of the non-club members, Sue Lyne finished top, closely followed by Trish Bolt. The booby prize of a Mars Bar went to Rebecca Kesselman.
